Owner Maintenance & Storage

What you may check and adjust between dealer services — free-play targets, wear limits, fuses and the battery — plus the full procedure for laying the bike up and bringing it back. Figures cross-checked against the factory service manual.

The figures to measure against. The manual leaves plug, belt and brake work to a dealer.

Beyond the daily walk-round, a few items have published limits an owner can check. The owner’s manual asks that the spark plugs, drive belt, valve clearances and most adjustments be done by an authorised Kawasaki dealer; the figures below are the targets they work to — useful for spotting a problem early.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Tyre pressures (cold), up to 185 kg load: front 250 kPa (2.5 bar), rear 290 kPa (2.9 bar). Refit the valve cap.

Checking throttle-grip free play: A = the throttle grip; B = the free play, felt by turning the grip lightly back and forth before the cable starts to pull. It should be 2–3 mm; the grip must turn smoothly and snap shut on its own. Have it adjusted (dealer) if outside this range.

Measuring remaining tread with a depth gauge (A) in a tyre groove. As the tread wears the tyre becomes far more puncture-prone — replace it once worn to the minimum allowable depth (front ≥ 1 mm; rear ≥ 2 mm, or ≥ 3 mm for sustained use above 130 km/h) and check for cracks, cuts and bulges.

Rear brake-fluid reservoir (near the brake pedal): A = the reservoir, B = the cover, C = the upper level line, D = the lower level line. Held horizontal, the fluid must stay between C and D. The front reservoir must stay above its lower level line. If either is low, check the brake lines for leaks and top up to the upper line with fresh DOT 4 fluid; on the rear, take off the bolt and remove the cover first.

Headlight-beam aiming: A = the vertical adjusting screw, B = the horizontal adjusting screw, both on the headlight rim. Turn A in or out to raise/lower the beam and B to centre it straight ahead, with the bike on its wheels and the rider seated. On high beam the brightest point should sit just below horizontal — about 0.4° down, a 50 mm drop at 7.6 m.

Fuses

Main fuse 30 A in the junction box; replace only with the rated fuse — and find the cause first.

The fuses live in the junction box; the main fuse is mounted separately (in the starter relay). A spare fuse is provided. Always replace a blown fuse with one of the same rating, as marked on the junction box and main fuse.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Caution

If a fuse blows, find and correct the cause before fitting a new one, or it will simply blow again. Never substitute a higher-rated fuse or a makeshift conductor — the wiring can overheat and cause a fire.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Battery

A sealed (maintenance-free) 12 V 18 Ah battery — slow-charge only, never an automotive quick-charger.

The bike uses a sealed maintenance-free battery (12 V 18 Ah). If the machine is left unused for longer than about two weeks the battery should be charged with an appropriate charger. Caution

Do not use an automotive-type quick charger — it can overcharge and damage the sealed battery. Never remove the sealing strip, and never fit a conventional (non-sealed) battery, or the electrical system cannot work properly. Charge at a slow rate — about one-tenth of the battery capacity in amperes (≈ 1.8 A for an 18 Ah battery).src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Removing & refitting the battery

    Remove the rider’s and passenger’s seats, then the battery-holder bolts and the battery holder; take off the battery cover.

    Disconnect the leads — the (−) negative terminal first, then the (+) positive — and lift the battery out.

    Warning

    Battery posts, terminals and related parts contain lead and lead compounds — wash your hands after handling.

    To refit, reverse the order: connect the capped (red) (+) lead first, then the (−) lead.

    Caution

    Reversing the leads — (−) cable to the (+) terminal or vice-versa — can seriously damage the electrical system.

    Lightly grease the terminals and fit the protective cap; refit the holder and the parts removed.

Battery terminals — A (+) positive · B (−) negative. Disconnect (−) first, then (+); reconnect the capped (red) (+) lead first, then the (−). Connecting a lead to the wrong terminal can seriously damage the electrical system.

Storage

Preparing the bike to be laid up, and bringing it safely back into service.

Note

When not riding the bike for 30–60 days, mix a fuel stabiliser (such as STA-BIL) into the tank; the additive inhibits oxidation and the gummy deposits it leaves. For longer storage, empty the fuel system entirely (below). Never store the machine with “gasohol” in the fuel system.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Preparation for storage

    Clean the whole machine thoroughly.

    Run the engine about five minutes to warm the oil, switch off and drain the oil; refill with fresh oil.

    Warning

    Used motor oil is toxic — dispose of it properly. Contact your local authority for approved disposal or recycling.

    Empty the fuel tank with a pump or siphon, then run the engine at idle until the fuel left in the system is used up.

    Warning

    Petrol is extremely flammable and can be explosive. Turn the ignition OFF, don’t smoke, and work in a well-ventilated area free of flames or sparks (including pilot lights). Dispose of petrol properly.

    Remove the spark plugs and spray fogging oil (e.g. Kawasaki K-Kare Fogging Oil, part no. K61030-002) into each cylinder, then crank a few seconds to coat the bores; refit the plugs.

    Warning

    Don’t lean over the engine while cranking — an air/oil mist can be ejected from the plug holes into your eyes. If it does, flush with plenty of clean water and see a physician.

    Reduce tyre pressure by about 20 %.

    Set the bike on a stand so both wheels are off the ground (or put boards under the wheels to keep damp away from the tyres).

    Spray oil on unpainted metal to prevent rust — keep it off rubber and the brakes — and lubricate all the cables.

    Remove the battery and store it out of direct sunlight, moisture and freezing temperatures; give it a slow charge (one ampere or less) about once a month.

    Tie plastic bags over the mufflers to keep moisture out, and cover the motorcycle.

Preparation after storage

  1. 1

    Remove the plastic bags from the mufflers.

  2. 2

    Refit the battery, charging it first if necessary.

  3. 3

    Check the spark plugs are tight.

  4. 4

    Fill the fuel tank.

  5. 5

    Work through every item in the Daily Safety Checks, and lubricate the points in the General Lubrication list.
