Troubleshooting

The owner’s-manual roadside fault-finding guide — what to check when the starter won’t turn, the engine cranks but won’t fire, or it stalls. For an illuminated FI light, read the DFI self-diagnosis service codes.

Possible causeCheck
Engine-stop switch is offSet the right-bar stop switch to the run position.
In gear without the clutch / not in neutralSelect neutral, or pull the clutch in with the side stand fully up.
Fuse blownInspect the fuses; replace any blown fuse (find the cause first).

Engine cranks but won’t start

Engine cranks but won’t start
Possible causeCheck
No fuel in tankRefuel.
Fuel line cloggedHave the fuel system inspected.
Fuel broken down (stale)Drain and refill with fresh petrol.
Engine floodedCrank with the throttle fully open to clear it (the DFI needs no throttle to start normally).
Spark plugs fouled, wet, or making poor contactInspect / clean / refit the spark plugs and caps.
Incorrect spark-plug gapReset to 1.0–1.1 mm or fit new plugs (NGK IZFR6F-11).
Vehicle-down sensor tripped (after a tip-over)Turn the ignition OFF, then back ON before restarting.
Note

If the FI (fuel-injection) warning light is on, the DFI system has logged a fault. Read the self-diagnosis service code to find which sensor or circuit is at fault before chasing other causes.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)

Read the fault code

Different causes when it dies just as you select 1st versus while riding.

Just when shifting into 1st gear

Just when shifting into 1st gear
Possible causeCheck
Side stand left downRetract the side stand fully — the interlock cuts the engine when you select a gear with it down.
Clutch not disengaging properlyCheck the clutch lever free play; have the clutch inspected if it drags.

While riding

While riding
Possible causeCheck
No fuel in tankRefuel.
Fuel-tank air vent obstructedClear the tank-cap breather so fuel can flow.
OverheatingPull over and let the engine cool; check the coolant level once cold.
Battery dischargedHave the charging system and battery checked.
Note

For anything beyond these roadside checks — persistent stalling, a flashing or steady FI light, or a fault you can’t clear — have the motorcycle inspected by an authorised Kawasaki dealer rather than continuing to ride.src: Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 Owner’s Manual (rider’s handbook, 161 pp.)
