A wax-pellet thermostat and a thermostatic fan keep the engine within a narrow temperature band; the radiator cap pressurises the system and shuttles coolant to and from the reserve tank.
When the engine starts the water pump circulates coolant. Below 58–62 °C the thermostat stays closed, so flow is restricted to a small bleed hole and the engine warms quickly. Above 58–62 °C the thermostat opens and continuously modulates to hold temperature. When coolant reaches 100–110 °C the fan switch closes and the radiator fan runs; it stops again below 97–103 °C. The manual prints two coolant-capacity figures: this Cooling-System spec says “2.5 L (2.6 US qt.)”, while the Periodic-Maintenance refill page prints “2.6 L (2.5 US qt.)”. The conversion math (2.5 L = 2.64 US qt) makes 2.5 L the consistent value — the refill page transposed the metric and US numbers. The water-pump impeller bolt has LEFT-HAND threads — turn it clockwise to remove, counter-clockwise to tighten.
Routine coolant checks plus the leak pressure-test and the periodic flush.

Deterioration check: inspect the coolant in the level hose. Whitish cotton-like wafts mean aluminium parts are corroding; a brown tint means iron/steel is rusting — flush in either case. An abnormal smell can mean exhaust gas leaking into the coolant, so check for a system leak. Pressure testing for leaks
Cooling-system pressure tester

Remove the fuel tank (see Fuel System chapter), then the radiator cap.

Wet the filler-neck sealing surfaces with water or coolant and fit the pressure tester.
Prevents false leakage past the tester.

Pump the system up carefully to 123 kPa (1.25 kgf/cm²).
CautionDo not exceed 123 kPa — the system maximum. Over-pressuring can damage the radiator and hoses.

Watch the gauge for at least 6 seconds. If it holds 93 kPa or more, the system is sound.

If pressure drops with no external leak, suspect internal leakage; droplets in the engine oil point to head/cylinder gaskets or the water pump.

Remove the tester, top up the coolant and refit the radiator cap.
Cooling-system flushing
Flush when rust, scale or lime is suspected in the jacket or radiator.

Drain the system (see Periodic Maintenance — coolant change).

Fill with fresh water plus a flushing compound.
CautionUse only a compound safe for aluminium engines and radiators; follow the product instructions.

Warm up and run at normal operating temperature for about ten minutes, then stop and drain.

Fill with fresh water, warm up, and drain — repeat this rinse once more.

Fill with permanent-type coolant and bleed the air (see Periodic Maintenance — coolant change).
Impeller removal/installation (left-hand-thread bolt) and mechanical-seal service.
Impeller removal & installation
Reached after removing the muffler, exhaust pipe and transmission covers.

Remove the muffler and exhaust pipe (Engine Top End chapter) and the outer & inner transmission covers (Crankshaft/Transmission chapter).

Remove the impeller bolt and impeller.
CautionThe impeller bolt has LEFT-HAND threads — turn it CLOCKWISE to remove it.

On refitting, put the washer on the impeller bolt and tighten by turning it counter-clockwise.
Torque12 N·m
Inspection: check the mechanical seal — if any part is damaged, replace the seal as a unit (the sealing seat and rubber seal lift out by hand). Inspect the impeller and replace it if the blades are damaged or the surface is corroded. If the seal and ball bearings are damaged, the mechanical seal, ball bearings and oil seal are replaced with the crankcase split. A replacement mechanical seal has an adhesive-coated body — do not apply liquid gasket to its outer surface; clean the sliding faces with high-flash-point solvent and give them a little coolant for initial lubrication.src: Kawasaki VN2000-A1 Service Manual — Periodic Maintenance (Torque & Locking Agent / Specifications tables, pp. 2-7…2-13)
Radiator R&I (mind the direct-wired fan), cap and filler-neck tests, and the thermostat bench test.
The radiator fan is wired directly to the battery and can start even with the ignition switch OFF. Radiator removal & installation

Drain the coolant, then disconnect the radiator-fan motor connector.

Remove the radiator-cover bolts and cover, loosen the hose clamps and free the radiator hoses, and remove the radiator bolt.

Lift the radiator clear of its stoppers and remove it.
CautionDo not touch the radiator core — you will bend the fins and lose cooling efficiency.

Remove the radiator-fan bolts and fan if needed.

On installation, torque the radiator-fan bolts, seat the radiator stoppers in their grommets, and torque the cover bolts and hose-clamp screws.
Torquefan 8.3 N·m · cover 11 N·m · clamps 2.0 N·m
Radiator inspection: clear any airflow obstructions and gently straighten bent fins. Replace the radiator if more than 20% of the core air passages are blocked by unremovable obstructions or irreparably deformed fins. Cap & filler-neck: check the cap’s top and bottom valve seals and replace the cap if either is damaged. On a pressure tester the relief valve must open within 93–123 kPa and hold within that range for at least 6 seconds; replace the cap if it holds too much or cannot hold pressure. Thermostat bench test

Remove the thermostat (drain ~200 mL of coolant and remove the fuel tank to reach the housing). If the valve is open at room temperature, replace it.

Suspend the thermostat and an accurate thermometer in a container of water, heat-sensitive parts at the same depth, not touching the sides or bottom.
- 3
Raise the water temperature gradually while stirring; confirm the valve opens at 58–62 °C and lifts ≥ 8 mm by 75 °C. Replace the thermostat if it is out of range.

On installation, fit the thermostat so the air-bleeder hole is on top, use a new O-ring and apply locking agent to the cap screws.
