Engine Top End

Cylinder heads, camshafts and rocker gear, the auto-adjusting hydraulic lash adjusters (no valve-clearance check), decompression mechanism, cylinders, pistons and rings, with full wear limits, torque table and the cylinder-compression test.

Camshaft drive seen at camshaft removal: the camshaft chain [D] runs over the two camshafts [F] and the lower sprocket, tensioned by the chain tensioner [C] (held by its bolts [B]); the decompression shafts [E] sit in the camshafts and the spacer [A] locates on the right. Note

The VN2000 has no scheduled valve-clearance check or shim/screw adjustment: each rocker arm carries a hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA) that takes up clearance automatically from engine-oil pressure. Measuring piston-ring end gap. Push the ring [A] a little way into the bore with the piston so it sits square, then measure the gap [B] between its ends with a thickness gauge. Standard end gaps are 0.25–0.35 mm (top), 0.40–0.55 mm (second) and 0.3–0.9 mm (oil); replace the rings if any gap exceeds its service limit (0.7 / 0.8 / 1.2 mm).

Head nuts are torqued in two passes in the specified diagonal sequence with molybdenum-disulfide oil on the threads. The spark-plug figure here (17 N·m) matches the owner’s manual; the Periodic-Maintenance plug-replacement procedure prints 18 N·m — see that chapter’s note.

Head-nut tightening order, front cylinder head [H] and rear cylinder head [I]. Tighten the head nuts in the numbered sequence 1→6 (centre-out, diagonal); F = φ10 nuts, G = φ12 nuts. Use molybdenum-disulfide oil on the threads and torque in two passes — φ10 to 15 then 29 N·m, φ12 to 29 then 88 N·m — and only then torque the lower head nuts to 25 N·m. A/B/E are the head gaskets and their locating marks.

A compression test is the quickest health check on the top end; readings outside the usable range point at valves, rings or the decompressor.

Battery fully charged, engine warm.

    Warm the engine thoroughly, then stop it and remove the fuel tank (Fuel System chapter).

    For the cylinder being tested, remove one spark plug and thread the compression gauge and adapter firmly into the plug hole; leave the second plug fitted (lead off). For the other cylinder, remove both plugs.

    With the throttle held fully open, crank the engine on the starter until the gauge stops rising — the highest reading is the compression.

    Usable range 284–500 kPa @200 rpm.

    Repeat for the other cylinder, then refit the spark plugs.

Note

Higher than the usable range usually means carbon build-up or a wrong head-gasket thickness; lower means worn valves/seats, worn rings or bores, a seized HLA, or a damaged decompression mechanism. The self-adjusting tappets that replace a valve-clearance check; they need bleeding whenever disturbed.

Each rocker arm houses an HLA that maintains zero valve lash from oil pressure. They are not serviced on a schedule, but if the rocker case is opened a noisy HLA must be air-bled in an oil bath before refitting. HLA air bleeding

Done in a container of fresh engine oil.

    Fill a container with engine oil and submerge the HLA.

  2. 2

    Grind a thumbtack needle down to 2.1–2.3 mm long, smooth its edge, and use it to push the HLA check valve in while moving the plunger up and down in the oil.

    Caution

    Do not push the check valve in more than 2.1–2.3 mm — pushing too deep can damage the HLA.

    If the plunger keeps sinking into the body after bleeding, repeat; if it still sinks, replace the HLA.

  4. 4

    Soak the rocker arm in engine oil and insert the bled HLA, keeping it upright so oil does not leak out.
